Discourse, Immigration and the Spanish Press: Critical Analysis of the Discourse on the Ceuta and Melilla Border Incident

The Spanish press relayed the events that unfolded during migratory incident occurred in Ceuta and Melilla on 17 May 2021. Considering media’s key role social ideological construction, purpose of this article is to analyze informative treatment gave incident, contributing study image shown about migrant population media. For this, present qualitative performed a critical analysis, using Atlas software. Ti 8, discourse featuring newspaper publications El País, Mundo, La Vanguardia ABC. results demonstrated following tendencies: negative-tone discourse; invisibility women; “we” vs. “them” narrative. In light reality, we suggest improvements be made, including shift populist greater focus diasporas.
